Three Chobham artists are joining in the county-wide arty party that is the Surrey Artists Open Studios.

Painters, sculptors, photographers and artists working in glass, textiles and other media will be opening their studios and often their homes to the general public during the two weeks of the event, June 5th – 24th.

Alan Brain, whose studio is at Fairoaks Airport, describes his contemporary work, both abstract pieces and figures, as aspiring to create ‘visible feelings’.

He is an Open Studios regular. “I just love to meet people who are interested in art. Opening my studio gives a chance for people to come by to see what we artists do without formality or the expectation that they should be prepared to buy something. I think I, like many artists, need to hear what others think about what I create and visitors can readily give you their honest views - it is valuable and refreshing to hear these untainted opinions.”

Beverley Gibsone, who works at home in Chobham in a garden studio, is inspired by the rhythms of the natural environment, music, and manmade structures.

“Life painting and drawing act as a springboard to inspire and inform my abstract paintings in terms of colour, form, light and space” she says.

Ceramicist Elaine Coles is one of a small group from the Bank Gallery Artists Co-operative who have an exhibition at the Lightbox in Woking, June 5th – July 1st, timed to coincide with the Open Studios event. It continues for a third week.

Elaine’s current work is smoke fired porcelain, as shown below, and she also mades traditional glazed raku pieces, sometimes incorporating precious metal clay and gem stones.
